Photos from the 2007 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous 24hr Race.

I have just posted a whole bunch of photos from the 2007 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous 24 hour mountain bike race. This is the best 24 hour mountain bike race in Ontario, if not the world, as the registration is strictly limited, the accomodations are excellent, and the course layout is always excellent. The race is organized by the Wizard of Wheels. Make sure to check out this event and the other great events they organize in the future.

Ontario Cup #2 at Albion Hills

The weather was great for the second Ontario Cup of the year. Yesterday was sunny and cool in the morning for the 9:30am start of the singlespeed catagory. A good crowd was out again for the second race – 20 men and 3 women. My set up for the day was Stan’s Crow tires at 27 psi and a 34:19 gear on my rigid 29′er. The Crow tires were fast but pretty sketchy. When they break loose they don’t hook back up very well. The gear was probably a little low for the day. Only the 1:30 start had the Green Monster climb in the course, so without this climb, a harder gear might have worked better. My race went well. Working throught the traffic from the groups ahead was tough off the start – lots of stop and go! The second and third laps were pretty open, and I got a good rythm going. I ended up in 5th place – the same as last week. We’ll see if I can pick it up as the season progresses! Here is the course from this year:

The 1:30 course is in yellow. Everyone else shortcuts the Green Monster climb along the black dotted line. The course profile for the 9:30/11:30 course looks like:

More Carbon Fiber Test Samples

Well, some more carbon fiber test samples for mountain bike frames this time.

MTB Carbon Fiber Test Section

It should look pretty much identical to the other test sections – because it is, on the outside at least.  However, the head tube is twice the thickness, and the down tube is internally built up to twice the thickness at the head tube end.  We’ll see what this translates into on the strength and stiffness side of things.  This sample is also sporting a waxed ‘raw’ finish that I think we will try on some frames.  The next frame is going to be a carbon fiber singlespeed 29er mountain bike with titanium eccentric hardware and dropouts.
