Buckwallow Ontario Cup Race Report

The Buckwallow Ontario Cup Race was another scorcher. Thunderstorms were threatened, but never arrived, so it stayed hot and humid. The ground was very dry, loose and dusty. The extensive double track sections of the course were pitted and rough from preriding, and only got worse throughout the day. The singletrack was excellent – to offset the punishingly rough doubletrack! Here is what the course looked like:

I rode my True North Cycles custom rigid 29er singlespeed with 34:17 gearing, which seemed about perfect. If anything, a little harder gear might have been good. I used a WTB Weirwolf 2.55 front tire at 24psi, and a WTB Nanoraptor 2.1 tire at 27psi on the rear. This was an awesome setup – the massive front gave a bit of extra cushion and grip. Here is my heart rate data:

The average is 180 BPM for the race. The one big dip is when I bounced myself off of the ground real hard and took a couple of minutes to get back up to full speed. Inspite of this I managed to come in 4th out of 25 racers – I’m happy with that. Make sure to check out the True North Cycles Race Team site for more details and stories from the rest of the crew.
