Bike of the Day 01 Nov 2007 07:04 pm
650B Speedster
Brad just picked up his brand new custom 650B bicycle. The bike is a fast all-rounder with fast, comfortable 38mm tires on 650B rims, dynamo powered headlight, braze-on Paul’s racer brakes and Brooks saddle and bar-tape. The bike rides like a dream.

I keep hearing tid-bits about how 650B’s are ideal for certain uses but, in this case, what are the real advantages over 700C? I can appreciate that uniqueness has its merits, but would that outweigh limited wheel/rubber options? Or maybe I’m just naive to the selections that are commercially available (and possibly to performance/enjoyment advantages)…

650B is nothing magic – it is just another option. The tire selection is a little limited, but the tires available are good. With the 38mm tires, this bike feels a lot like a bike with 700x23C tires, but with the comfort of running tires at 50psi. It seems to be a good niche – fast and comfortable.

I’ve heard people are using 650b for mountain bikes too (apparently with up to 2.3″ tires), either using stock frames that happen to fit or on custom frames for the geometry. I wonder if this will catch on as a “just right” intermediate between 26″ and 29″…
