The Ultimate Winter Bike
This is quite possibly the ultimate winter commuter bike: durable frame, room for studded tires and fenders, fully enclosed chain, disc brakes, and it is a fully custom True North!

That enclosed chain has me curious.
Does the shell “float” on the chain or is it attached to the frame?
Can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like that and I’d really like to know how well it works and how easy it is to work with.
The rest of the bike is just purty….
Cheers, Dave

The chainguard is a “chainglider”:

The owner of this bike clued us in to them. I think Urbane cycle in Toronto carries them.

They only come in sizes for a couple of gear ratios, and I had to trim it to fit over the freewheel, but it completely encloses the chain and floats on the chain, no contact with the frame. It make a little noise when you are pedalling, but not really any drag.

Are those road BB7s or did you use levers that pull more cable than regular road levers?
Great bike anyhow, and the chain cover is very interesting. It certainly looks like all the bases were covered for winter riding.

They are the road BB7s. Though now you can get a nice Campy style Tektro road lever with v-brake pull.

I have had one of those chaingliders together with a Roloff Speedhub on my bike for nearly two years now. It’s very easy to put on and take off, even without tools, should you need to. I do hear a slight noise from it when pedalling slowly through our workshop at night when there is no other sound. But in the streets going at normal speeds even the air going passed my ears is louder. Under normal riding circumstances you can class it as silent. It’s not cheap though considering it’s only a bit of moulded plastic but it has saved me at least four new chains and has therefore paid its way at least threefold and is still going strong. I got mine while touring in Germany in summer of 06 but I have seen them now for sale in the US and Canada.
