Web Server Updates

You may have noticed some service interuptions with the Salientia website over the last couple of days. I’ve just moved the whole website from a Linux box in our living room to Korax hosting. There are a number of reasons for this – first of all, hosting with Korax is cheaper than the upcharge I have to pay our ISP for a fixed IP address. Secondly, the web traffic was starting to choke our connection – too many people looking at pictures on the server. Thirdly, Korax’s email servers are far faster and more reliable than our ISPs. Finally, this is all part of my plan to get rid of Bell and go to VOIP. Moving the WordPress blogs went smoothly – moving the gallery – not so smoothly. It turns out I’d configured the database with some options that are not supported on the Korax implementation of MySQL, so I need to rebuild the database….oh well.

You are not seeing much action over here as I’ve been busy updating the True North Cycles website. Make sure to check it out. I still have lots of photos to put up and lots of content to refine, so make sure to stop by regularly and see how it is progressing!

Technical Difficulties!

Well, shortly after leaving for Scotland, it looks like our DSL modem crashed. All it needed was quick reset – kind of hard to do from Scotland. So, the website was down for most of the trip. We are back up and running now. Over the next couple of days I’ll try to get up to date with a report on the Singlespeed World Championships, the World Championships in Fort William and our other adventures.

Some photographs that I took at the 2007 Boler Mountain Ontario Cup are now posted. I was racing in the 9:30 start, so there are only a few photos of the 11:30 racers, and a whole bunch of photos of the 1:30 elite and expert fields. The Ontario Cup races are organized by Chico Racing.

I have just posted a whole bunch of photos from the 2007 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous 24 hour mountain bike race. This is the best 24 hour mountain bike race in Ontario, if not the world, as the registration is strictly limited, the accomodations are excellent, and the course layout is always excellent. The race is organized by the Wizard of Wheels. Make sure to check out this event and the other great events they organize in the future.

Server Upgrades…

People actually seem to be using the server, so I thought it would be good to shore it up a little. I spent most of today putting in some more case fans, another disk drive for backups, an APC battery backup, and then getting automated backups and the power control working. Hopefully everything is now working the way it should!

Lots of geeky web updates. The Salientia.ca homepage now automatically incorporates the information from the blogs hosted on this site. The home page now gives you a list of the blogs with their most recent post. I still need to rework the page for useability and clean up the code, but it seems to be working for now. Many thanks to the folks at FeedForAll for the rss2html php script that this is all based on.

Just finished adding Mari and Dave’s blog to the server. If this keeps up, I’m going to have to get a faster connection! They have promised they are going to post lots of updates during their upcoming trip to Japan, so make sure to check out their site over the next couple of weeks.
